About The Project
Tenaska, with a presence in Fluvanna County for more than 20 years, is developing an additional natural gas-fueled power plant in the area. Similar to the existing Tenaska Virginia Generating Station, the proposed Expedition Generating Station would add reliability to the regional electric grid amid growing power demand, as well as generate tax revenue, jobs and other local economic benefits.
Expedition received its major approvals from Fluvanna County in Spring 2026, and the team is now pursuing state and federal permits.

Critical Need for Reliable Power
The Expedition Generating Station is under development in response to Virginia’s growing energy crisis. Demand for electricity is expected to double over the next decade, but the Commonwealth already can’t produce enough power to meet its own needs and relies heavily on electricity from other states.
New generation – particularly from reliable and dispatchable sources such as natural gas – is critical.
Regional grid operator PJM Interconnection identified Expedition among 51 energy projects in 13 states deemed critical to come online to maintain the reliability of the electric grid. As part of the Resource Reliability Initiative, Expedition is now an element in PJM’s plans for energy reliability.
Natural gas remains the cleanest fossil fuel for dispatchable and reliable power generation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality have stringent requirements for natural gas power plants related to air and water quality that are intended to be protective of human health and the environment.
